Medicare:

Visitors from certain countries have reciprocal rights here in Australia.

..."you are entitled to free treatment as a public inpatient or outpatient at a public hospital and access to subsidised medicines under the Pharmaceuticals Benefits Scheme during your visit to Australia. This arrangment covers any ill health or injury requiring immediate treatment while in Australia.

You will not, however, be entitled to free or subsidised treatment as a private patient in a public hospital nor as a patient in a private hospital.

You will not have access to Medicare for non-hospital medical care and will not be issued with a Medicare card. You should show your passport at hospitals and pharmacies".

Medicare Enrolment ........."persons holding entitlement to reside permanently in Australia and seek medicare enrolment are required to provide documentation to support their intention to reside permanently in Australia. The documents, together with a completed Enrolement Application Form" (and Declaration of Residency for Medicare Purposes Form) "should be presented at a Medicare Office.
